Er zijn plekken in je dna die mede bepalen hoe ziek je wordt van een coronabesmetting. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek, waar het UMCG, de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en biobank Lifelines aan hebben meegewerkt. ‘De bevindingen kunnen bijdragen aan een medicijn voor COVID-19’, zegt Lude Franke.Hij is hoogleraar Genetica in het UMCG en laat weten dat het onderzoek laat zien dat er genetische factoren zijn die een effect hebben op de mate waarin iemand ziek wordt van een coronabesmetting.
‘Doordat de eerste plekken in het dna nu zijn gevonden, kunnen we achterhalen wat de invloed van die plekken is en in welke biologische processen verstoord raken. Die kennis draagt hopelijk bij aan het ontwikkelen van nieuwe antivirale medicijnen of het vinden van bestaande medicijnen waarvan bekend is dat ze invloed hebben op diezelfde plekken in het dna.’
Wereldwijde samenwerking
Franke is één van de initiatiefnemers van een onderzoeksproject waarmee gezocht wordt naar genetische factoren en omgevingsfactoren waardoor een corona-infectie zich ontwikkelt. Sinds de start van de coronacrisis vullen tienduizenden mensen uit Noord-Nederland tweewekelijks een vragenlijst over hun gezondheid in. Door die data te combineren, konden verschillen in het dna opgemerkt worden. ‘We vonden een verband tussen de ernst van het ziektebeloop van COVID-19 en bepaalde plekken in het dna’, legt de hoogleraar Genetica uit.
Om meer te leren over het coronavirus werken genetische onderzoekers wereldwijd samen via het COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative. Ook de bevindingen uit het doorlopende Lifelines Corona-onderzoek zijn via dat consortium gedeeld en gebruikt.
